Why Does My Dog Eat Poop?

Hi! I got a question from someone, about why does their dog eat poop? So here is the answer why, and how to stop it!

Dogs who eat poop may have health or behavior issues. Dogs who steal food off tables, or beg for food, are more prone to the poop eating habit.

Dogs who are confined for more than 3 hours will may have a poop eating habit. Puppies that are just bought may have a poop eating habit because their mother’s scent may smell somewhat like their poo.

Another two reasons is that the dog may not receive enough attention, and begins to eat poop to make you pay attention to it. Also, the dog may associate poop with food he/she is being fed.

To stop the habit, clean up the poop before your puppy can eat it. Do not punish or scold the puppy when they do eat it. Instead tell the puppy to drop it. The puppy may not be receiving enough nutrients either. This habit takes at least a year to break. This is because puppies will not be fully trained until after adolescence.

I also wanted to cover why your dog may eat other dogs poo. It is common for dogs to eat other animals poop too such as horse poo, and others. Anyway, your dog might like  the taste of other poop and the nutrients that the poop may provide. To solve this, do the same thing you would if your dog is eating his/her poop.

Anyway, I hope you guys learned something from this post! If you have any comments, please put it in the comments below!

  2. Thanks for this post! My dog has never eaten his poo before, but it’s still very helpful if he ever did decide to! He has eaten rabbit poo before. We’re giving him a good diet, so I think he just likes the taste. So gross I’ll have to keep a better eye on him and clean it up!
