Treat or Toy?

Hi guys! Today’s post is about deciding what you should use for positive reinforcement when training your dog!

When you train your dog, positive reinforcement is very, very, very important. But sometimes, it’s hard to decide what reward to give your dog. In this post, we’ll be looking at the pro’s and con’s of different rewards, and finding the right type of reward for your dog. Let’s get started!

Most dogs respond better when there’s food involved. What dog can’t resist a tasty treat? But feeding to many treats can lead to weight issues, so you have to vary up the rewards you give your dog.

Treats:

Treats are great for training, but must be used in moderation. Your dog may learn tricks much faster with treats, but can also gain a lot of weight. For teaching important commands (come, and stay, these commands can also save your dogs life!) , treats may be the reward you want to give since you want your dog to learn the command as soon as possible.

Toys:

Dogs love to play! Rewarding your dog with a toy is an excellent reward because your dog can spend some quality time playing with you and having fun. However, this type of reward may not work very well if your dog doesn’t show much interest his/her new toys.

Positive Verbal Reinforcement:

Dogs love to make their humans happy, so using a happy tone and kind words will make your dog want to please you. I say that this kind of reinforcement is one of the best. Use positive verbal reinforcement as much as you can, because to much never hurts!

Now that you know the pro’s and cons of each one, you can test which works best for your dog. Do note that if you decide treats work the best (probably does) for your dog, you may want to consult your vet and ask which treats are healthiest and best for your dog.

I hope you enjoyed this post!
